what do i need  for baby?

You really don't need anything!! Part of the newborn experience at home is just being at home exactly as you are. In-home sessions are treated a little bit differently to studio sessions - I take a more lifestyle / documentary approach that is a time capsule of images of your day to day life.

What do we wear?

This is the most common question I get asked!

Firstly you need to be comfortable, and secondly be kind on yourself. Please don't forget that you just gave birth to a human, and your old wardrobe may not fit exactly like it did 9 months ago!

I suggest coordinating colours - not matching! Gone are the days of ALL family members in blue jeans and a white shirt (don't get me wrong - jeans and a shirt are still a good choice, and an easy one for Dad to pull together)

Soft muted colours keep the focus on your baby's tiny features rather than your clothing.

Textures can bring depth & dimension (think knits, cord, linen) gentle colours and patterns bring in some of your family personality.

I am happy to guide you - you are welcome to send me photo's of your options if you like!

Below are some examples of ways you can coordinate your family outfit selections

Our Baby's schedule

lets be honest - you and i are not in charge of this shoot schedule….. and thats ok!

Preperation

do i need to clean the house?

Short answer is no…. I don't expect a Pinterest home where every corner is styled like it came out of a magazine. I will look for places in your home that have great natural light and focus on these areas. I will often use lounges, nurseries and a bedrooms and focus on your connection as a family rather than your home furnishings.

Please remember this is a lifestyle session and the intention is to capture things exactly how they are, so if there is anything you don't want in photos then we will avoid those areas or you can just move things into another room for the shoot.

ARRIVAL

FEED, NAPPY CHANGE & GET COMFORTABLE

Before I arrive it's a good idea to get baby dressed in the outfit you want them in for the photo's, give them a feed, nappy change and wrap up to keep warm. I often arrive to a feeding mum, and this is usually good timing to have baby nice and settled for the shoot.

Siblings

If there are siblings joining the session you might discover that today is the day they decide to be extra un-cooperative… you don't have a special one (in the kindest way possible).

I have seen and heard it all, and I get it!

This can be completely overwhelming for siblings. They might feel like their world had been completely turned upside down, there is a new person in their space and EVERYTHING feels like it's about the baby….AGAIN.

My aim is to make them feel as main character as possible, and if they don't feel like participating in every moment, that's ok too. I will gently guide them into the photos on their terms, and when they are ready.

A special trip to the playground after the photos can be a good incentive to keep them focused on the task.

session length

how long will it take?

This all depends on how things flow and how settled baby is. Usually sessions last anywhere from 1 - 2 hours.

We have time for feeding, settling. If you have somewhere you need to be by a certain time just let me know, but there is plenty of time to relax into the shoot - I don't follow a rigid timeframe for newborn sessions, so don't feel like we need to rush though anything

FAQ

This is my first photoshoot, what should I know?

You don't need to pose for me! All you need to do is enjoy time with your family. You don't always need to be looking at the camera - in fact I think the best moments happen when you are just relaxing. I will gently guide you to capture you in the best light, capture all the small details and if I need you to do something I will let you know.

What if baby doesn't sleep?

Thats's ok! Working with a baby who doesn't want to miss a moment off their shoot doesn't worry me. The aim is to have your baby comfortable and happy, I have spent years perfecting the way I capture babies and I promise you will get beautiful photo's.

what if we aren't ready when you arrive?

I almost expect it. There is always a poo explosion, vomit situation or toddler meltdown - it's ok!

how long will the photo's take edit?

You will have them back within 2 weeks. The final images will be delivered to you via an online gallery sent to your email for you to download, share and print.
